SCHWARZENBERG CANAL: The Schwarzenberg Canal connects one of the tributaries of the Cold Vltava with the Austrian river Grösse Mühl, which is a tributary of the Danube. The total length of the canal is 44 kilometres. The canal was constructed between 1789 and 1822 in the area of the Bohemian Forest that was then owned by Prince Schwarzenberg. The purpose of the project was to facilitate the transportation of felled tree trunks from inaccessible areas on the northern slopes of the Bohemian Forest in the Vltava river basin to the main European watershed. This was achieved by crossing the Große Mühl river and continuing to the Danube, thereby supplying the imperial capital, Vienna, with firewood. The route traversed the former settlement of Růžný Vrchy (Rosenhügel) in the Svatý Tomáš district.
